I saw this play on Broadway in New York. Until this song came into the show, it seems the play just plodded along. Then, this song, and the show took on a whole different meaning to me.

its about an old actress at the end of her career returning to her hometown to find out that the man who loved her is now engaged to a young, beautiful woman. and she's saying ''send in the clowns'' because when mistakes happenned they did that in theatres to distract the audience.
