i'm from ky and hillbilly is ok redneck is not- kind of like a v er- redneck is a dumb racist- hillbilly just knows how to survive off the land-but what about the whole thing being dreadfully boring, thats what sucks-

But it's not necessarily all people of the same race lumped together. It's more a cultural and a geographical stereotype than a racial one. That's where I dispute the argument. It's not racist against all white people that lump them all together as "hicks" and "rednecks" but just people from a specific geographical area. Thus it really has nothing to do with race. However, I do agree that it is a prejudice and just like every other prejudice it should not be used. Shame on you, HotlineTV!

It takes an entire subset of people and puts them in an artificial negative category based on the experiences of an outside group & is therefore, by definition, racist. I have no idea what kind of folks you've been hanging out w/, but no one I know likes being referred to as either of those derogatory terms. Somehow in the American media lexicon it has become completely acceptable to refer to everyone south of the Ohio as "Rednecks" and to dismiss their positions and concerns on that basis.

...then by all means, do so.

Why is it racist? It's true that that song is sort of a cliche and that most of the mainstream media (as well as a majority of America) view the deep south as being like Deliverance, but really... racist?I dunno. Is the term "hillbilly" or "redneck" actually offensive? Usually people I meet from the deep south are almost proud to be called that.Whatever. The north understands the south as much as Christians understand Muslims.

"Dueling Banjos"... Seriously? Could you have been a little more racist? Maybe add in a comment about incest? Disgusting end to an otherwise good show.
